TAPPI T804 Compression Test of Fiberboard Shipping Containers
TAPPI T804 measures the ability of a corrugated or solid fiber shipping container to resist compressive forces. As an ISTA and ISO 17025 certified lab, we realize the importance of TAPPI T804 compression testing. Meeting the T804 requirements can be difficult. We understand the challenges and guide companies through the process.
Keystone Package Testing partners with customers to achieve package compliance. We have a reputation for helping customers achieve their package certifications. We provide comprehensive reports shortly after the completion of the testing. Keystone takes a consultative approach throughout the entire test program.

Summary of TAPPI T804 Compression Testing of Fiberboard Shipping Containers
This standard test method determines the resistance of fiberboard shipping containers to compressive forces. To achieve this, the container is placed between two platens. One of the platens is either mechanically or hydraulically driven. This is carried out to compress the unit under testing.
TAPPI T804 may be conducted when the container is empty. However, this does not apply if the overall performance is to be evaluated. If the previous is true, the container is loaded with its contents and inner packaging.
The compressive forces found in this test are related to the forces exerted on containers in stacks or encountered in transportation. TAPPI T804 is also used to compare the compressive resistance of containers deferring in construction or design.
TAPPI Test Procedures
Before testing, the samples are conditioned to TAPPI T402. At least five samples must be tested.
A consistent flap closure is used to ensure consistent results. A sealing board used for TAPPI T804 package testing should be wooden boards thick enough to apply the sealing pressure uniformly.
All boxes are tested in a conditioned environment. The containers are centered on the bottom platen of the compression machine. The load indicator is adjusted to zero. The lowest load range is selected with the greatest anticipated test load. A preload is applied. This will ensure definite platen contact in most instances.
The initial preload is 5% of the maximum compression resistance. Next, a load is applied at a relative rate of 13.0 mm/min.
Readings are taken at each 2.5mm deformation if a recording device is not used.
After the completion of the test, a report is composed of the following information:
- Dimensions of the container, style, flute, flute direction, grade of material, and type of manufacturer’s joint
- A graph of the loads sustained and corresponding deformations
- Orientation in which the containers were tested
- Number of specimens tested
- Method of closure
- Test results
