JIS D 0203 Method of Moisture, Rain and Spray Test for Automotive Parts
JIS-D-0203 testing is an ingress protect test standard published by the Japanese Standards Association. This automotive ingress protection testing standard applies to a number of parts. The scope of this IP Code testing specifies the methods of moisture resistance and waterproofness for automotive parts.
JIS D 0203 testing labs must put auto parts through a rigorous test plan that includes a variety of ingress protection tests. This testing of the waterproofness of enclosures includes the following tests.
M1 – Moisture Test. This test is to investigate the function of the parts subjected to moisture. The duration of this test is eight hours.
M2 – Moisture Test. This is the test to determine the function of the parts subjected to high temperature and humidity. The duration of this test is one hour.
Rain Testing
Rain testing simulates the dripping of rain drops on a unit. This section of the JIS 0203 enclosure testing standard includes two test protocols.
R1 – Rain Test
This test investigates the function of the parts subjected to droplets. The duration of this test is 10 minutes. The water temperature is to be 32 degrees Celsius.
R2 – Rain Test
This ingress protection testing determines the function of the parts subjected to indirect wind and rain or spray. The duration of this test is 10 minutes. The water temperature is to be 60 degrees Celsius.
Spray Testing
Spray testing is an ingress protection test using specific nozzles to spray water onto a unit from a certain distance and at a certain flow rate. JIS D 0203 testing labs must follow two testing protocols when completing spray testing.
S1 – Spray Test
The spray testing in this testing is to investigate the function of the parts subjected to direct wind and rain or spray. The duration of this test is 30 minutes. The flow of the water spray is 24.5 liters per minute minimum.
S2 – Spray Test
This spray testing is to investigate the function of the parts subjected to heavy water spray. The duration of this test is one hour. The flow of the water spray is 39.2 liters per minute minimum.
Dip Testing
Dip testing, also referred to as immersion testing has three sections in JIS D 0203 ingress protection testing. Below are the details of each of these three dip tests.
D1 – Dip Test
This IP Code test is to investigate the function of the parts subjected to occasional water immersion. The duration of this test is five minutes. In this JIS dip test, the unit is submerged as far as its upper surface.
D2 – Dip Test
This waterproof enclosure test determines the function of the parts continually subjected to water immersion or of the parts designed to be completely waterproof. The duration of this test is 10 minutes. In this automotive ingress protection test, the unit is submerged 100 millimeters from its upper surface. The temperature difference between the unit and the water is 30 degrees Celsius.
D3 – Dip Test
This drip testing is designed to investigate the function of the waterproofness of parts used in special applications. The duration of this test is 20 minutes. In this JIS D 0203 immersion test, the unit is submerged 100 meters from its upper surface. The temperature difference between the unit and the water is 50 degrees Celsius.
