Summary of MPD 7011F EMC Wiring Harness Testing
Missile Purchase Description (MPD) testing describes detailed requirements for wiring harnesses. Some requirements of this test include the quality and condition of parts and materials. All parts and materials are sound, of uniform quality and condition. They must also be free from seams, cracks, and other defects that might harmfully affect the strength, endurance, or wear of the equipment. Any part or material treated in any manner to conceal defects therein is subjected to immediate rejection.
Bundling is accomplished by anyone, or any combination of the following methods:
- Continuous round lacing
- Spot tying
- Cable strapping
Several different terms are used multiple times within this EMC test standard. This includes the definitions below.
- Twisted pair leads (shielded). Twisted pair leads must run. The shield shall go to the run number indicated in the wiring table. If no run number or destination is shown in the wiring table, the shield shall be cut back and insulated.
- Twisted leads. Leads specified to be twisted shall be twisted only within the harness unless shown otherwise. The twisting shall be firm and shall be accomplished without damage to the wires or insulation.
- Parallel leads. Leads not required to be twisted shall run parallel with each other avoiding cross-overs to the maximum extent possible, except at their break-out points.
- Sleeving. Sleeving shall be cut square, stepped, slit or split per the applicable drawing. Sleeving size, length and the termination point will be approximately as called out on the drawing.
- Lacing. Lacing shall be accomplished with flat, nylon tape which shall be IAW Specification MIL-T-43435 or the equivalent as specified on the drawing, and shall tie all legs securely to the harness with diagonal ties. Lacing shall be tight enough to prevent lead slippage but shall not damage the lead insulation.
- Lacing knots. Lacing knots shall be of the self-locking type. They shall not open when tension is removed from the cord on either side of the knot.
- Ties. Each break-out must be separated from adjacent breakouts by at least one tie. Two or more leads terminating at the same run number shall not be separated by ties. Where no break-outs occur, ties shall be spaced approximately the diameter of the harness except that for harnesses less than 1/2 inch in diameter, the ties shall be spaced not greater than 1/2 inch apart.
- Tie knots. For applications using wax-coated lacing. Start and finish ties and knots shall be treated with a polyvinyl chloride base adhesive, ASTM D2564 to which 0.5 plus or minus 0.1 percent weight of fluorescent pink pigment IAW P-1600 has been added.
- Flat-laced sections. Flat-faced sections of the harness shall not exceed the contour shown on the drawing. This shall be accomplished by tying, side-by-side, a suitable number of round laced rows of leads into which the harness must be divided.
Scope of MPD 7011F Electromagnetic Compatibility Compliance Testing
Sampling for inspection shall be conducted IAW Standard MIL-STD-105. Generally, the contractor is responsible for conducting the inspections and acceptance tests specified herein.
Additionally, the contractor is responsible for furnishing and maintaining the test equipment and facilities necessary for conducting the inspections and tests required by this EMC compliance specification. Contractors not having laboratory facilities satisfactory to the procuring activity will engage the services of a commercial testing laboratory, such as Keystone Compliance, acceptable to the procuring activity.
