Ingress Protection (IP Code) Testing – IP17: Large Object & Immersion Protection

IP17 testing is a critical standard for assessing a product’s resistance to immersion in water and its ability to withstand impacts from large objects of 50mm size. This type of testing is essential for products designed for use in environments where there is a potential for immersion in water and contact with large objects.

Meeting ingress protection compliance requirements can be difficult. We understand the challenges and guide companies through the process. Keystone provides the peace of mind that all of your needs will be met under one roof. Our proven process helps avoid product launch delays.

Summary of IP 17 Ingress Protection Testing

The IP17 testing is part of the International Protection (IP) Marking system, overseen by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This system classifies the level of protection provided by enclosures of electrical equipment against external factors such as solid objects and liquids.

The IP17 rating specifically indicates the product’s capacity to resist the ingress of large objects of 50mm diameter and to withstand immersion in water.

Understanding IP17 Testing

IP17 testing encompasses two primary protective measures:

50mm Large Object Protection (First Digit – ‘1’)

This test determines the product’s ability to prevent the entry of objects with a diameter of 50mm.

Immersion Protection (Second Digit – ‘7’)

This evaluates the product’s capability to withstand temporary immersion in water under specified conditions.

IP 17 Laboratory Testing Procedures

The procedure for IP17 testing includes:

Test for 50mm Large Object Protection: The test involves using a 50mm diameter object to try to penetrate the enclosure. This object should not fully penetrate the enclosure or come into contact with any hazardous internal components.

Test for Immersion Protection: The product is immersed in water at a depth and for a duration as specified by the standard, which is usually at least 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter. The test ensures that no harmful amount of water is able to enter the enclosure during this period.

Importance of IP17 Testing

Enhanced Durability and Safety

IP17 testing ensures that products are robust enough to withstand environments where immersion in water and large object impacts are a possibility, thereby enhancing their safety and durability.

Reliability in Wet Conditions

Products that successfully pass IP17 testing are reliable in wet conditions and when exposed to large objects, ensuring continued functionality.

Consumer Confidence

An IP17 rating can boost consumer trust in the product’s resilience and quality.

Compliance with Safety Standards

Adhering to the IP17 standard is important for products used in environments where immersion and large object impacts are likely.

Industry Applications

IP17 testing is particularly relevant in several industries:

Outdoor and Marine Equipment: For equipment used in marine settings or outdoor environments where temporary immersion in water is possible.

Industrial Equipment: In industries where machinery might be exposed to both large objects and the risk of immersion in water.

Consumer Electronics: Especially for devices that are used in settings where they might be submerged in water and exposed to large objects.

Expert IP 17 Ingress Protection (IP Code) Testing Laboratory

IP17 testing is a crucial process in confirming a product’s capability to resist intrusion from 50mm large objects and endure temporary immersion in water. This testing not only verifies the physical robustness of products but also contributes to their safety and reliability in challenging environments.

Our team strives to give our customers more time and energy on product development instead of testing. Keystone has a full lab of test equipment which permits us to provide short lead times on scheduling. In addition to IP17 testing, we offer a full range of IP Code tests, from IP10 to IP69K, ensuring comprehensive coverage for all ingress protection testing standards.
