IP12 testing is an important part of the International Protection (IP) Marking code, established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The IP code provides a framework for categorizing the degree of protection offered by enclosures against the intrusion of solid objects and liquids.

The IP12 rating specifically addresses the product’s defense against large objects and water ingress at an angle.

Understanding IP12 Testing

IP12 testing involves two major aspects:

Large Object Protection (First Digit – ‘1’)

This assesses the product’s capability to prevent the entry of objects larger than 50 mm in diameter.

Tilted Drip Water Protection (Second Digit – ‘2’)

This tests the product’s ability to resist water dripping at an angle up to 15 degrees from the vertical.

IP 12 Laboratory Testing Procedures

The process for IP12 testing is methodical:

Test for Large Object Protection: The test uses a sphere of 12.5 mm diameter to attempt entry into the enclosure. The object must not fully penetrate or make contact with any hazardous internal components. A force of up to 50 N is applied for 1 minute.

Test for Tilted Drip Water Protection: Water is dripped onto the product at an angle of 15 degrees from the vertical. The test simulates conditions where the product is exposed to angled water drips at a rate of 3 mm per minute, for a minimum duration of 10 minutes.
