Summary of IP 67 Ingress Protection Testing

Part of the International Protection (IP) Marking system, managed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), IP67 testing provides guidelines for the level of protection offered by enclosures against dust and water.

This rating is critical for ensuring the safety and functionality of electrical equipment in environments prone to dust and temporary water immersion.

The IP67 rating ensures that these products can entirely prevent the entry of dust and are capable of protecting against water immersion, maintaining their operational integrity and safety in a variety of applications.

Understanding IP67 Testing

IP67 testing involves two key aspects of protection:

Dust-Tight Protection (First Digit – ‘6’)

This test evaluates the enclosure’s ability to completely prevent the entry of dust, ensuring the highest level of dust protection.

Temporary Immersion Protection (Second Digit – ‘7’)

This aspect of the test assesses the product’s ability to withstand temporary immersion in water under specified conditions, such as depth and duration.

IP67 Laboratory Testing Procedures

The methodology for IP67 testing is rigorous and comprehensive:

Sample Preparation:

Before IP67 testing begins, the test sample is inspected and prepared in its normal-use configuration, including all covers, seals, connectors, cable entries, and fasteners. Any required test modifications are then completed, such as drilling a small access hole and installing a sealed vacuum connection for the IP6X dust test.

If you’re using one sample and you have to physically drill it for the IP6X vacuum connection, run the IPX7 immersion portion first. That lets you evaluate water ingress on the enclosure in its normal, unmodified configuration before adding a test-specific penetration.

The important nuance is that IEC 60529 does not require “IPX7 must always be first.” The dust and water portions are separate evaluations associated with the two IP digits. When conducting testing, sample strategy matters:

  • One unit: IPX7 immersion → inspect → prepare/drill for vacuum → IP6X dust test.
  • Two equivalent units: one can be dedicated to IPX7 and the other to IP6X. This avoids one test or its preparation affecting the other.

Testing Procedures:

Test for Dust-Tight Protection: The enclosure is exposed to a controlled dust-filled environment to verify that dust cannot penetrate the enclosure or contaminate internal components. For the IP6X portion of IP67 testing, talcum powder is circulated throughout the chamber in accordance with IEC 60529. For applications requiring a more representative environmental dust profile, testing may also use standardized Arizona test dust, such as ISO 12103-1 A2 Fine Test Dust.

Test for Temporary Immersion Protection: The product is immersed in water at a depth determined by the standard, typically around 1 meter, for a duration specified by the manufacturer, usually at least 30 minutes.

This test checks whether the enclosure can effectively prevent water from entering and causing damage to the internal electrical components during this period of submersion.

Pass/Fail Evaluation

Following dust-chamber exposure, the enclosure must demonstrate complete protection against dust ingress, with no observable dust penetration into the protected interior.

Following temporary immersion testing, the enclosure is opened and inspected for water ingress. Compliance is based on whether any water that entered the enclosure is present in a quantity or location capable of producing harmful effects or impairing the intended operation of the equipment.
