ISO 2247 Packaging for Vibration Tests at Low-Frequency Vibrations

ISO 2247 testing specifies methods to carry out vibration tests for transport packages at fixed frequencies. As an ISTA and ISO 17025 certified lab, we realize the importance of ISO 2247 vibration transportation testing. Meeting the low-frequency vibration regulatory compliance requirements can be difficult. We understand the challenges and guide companies through the process.

Keystone Compliance provides the peace of mind that all of your needs will be met. When packages do not meet the requirements, we assist with finding solutions. Keystone takes pride in partnering with customers to achieve package compliance. Lastly, we are in constant communication throughout the test process.

Summary of ISO 2247 Vibration Analysis Information

These package compliance tests are performed to investigate the effects of low-frequency vibration. ISO 2247 can also be used to measure the ability of a package or unitized load to withstand a distribution system that includes a vibration hazard. These hazards may be at a low frequency or repetitive shock.

The following documents contain provisions that constitute this International Standard.

ISO 2206, Packaging – Complete, filled transport packages – Identification of parts when testing

ISO 2233, Packaging – Complete, filled transport packages and unit loads – Conditioning for testing

ISO 2234, Packaging – Complete, filled transport packages and unit loads – Stacking tests using static load

Scope of ISO 2247 Filled Transport Packages and Unit Load Testing

There are two common ISO package testing procedures when dealing with vibration testing at low frequencies. Wherever possible, both ISO 2247 shock tests are conducted in atmospheric conditions identical to those used for conditioning.

These conditions are particularly important for the materials or application of the test specimen. However, if these conditions are unavailable, the conditioning is carried out as closely as possible.

The test specimen is placed on the vibration table with the predetermined attitude. Its center of gravity must be placed as near as practicable to the center of the table. If the ISO test specimen is not secured to the table, it may be fenced.

If a superimposed load is required, the loading procedure will comply with ISO 2234.

Next, the test specimen is subjected to vibration according to either test method A or B.

Method A – The vibration table is operated to give an acceleration at a selected level between 0,5 g and 1,0 g. The test specimen should not separate from the table. Lastly, the test is performed at a peak-to-peak displacement.

Method B – The vibration table is operated to give an acceleration at a selected level. This is so that the test specimen is separated from the table. This causes repetitive shock. The desired amplitude is then selected.

The vibration of the specimen starts at a frequency of 2 Hz and slowly increases. This occurs until the specimen repeatedly separates from the vibration table.

Significance of ISO 2247 Vibration Testing at Low Frequencies

The required ISO integrity conditioning for the test specimen must be noted throughout the test processes. The test specimen shall be conditioned in accordance with one of the conditions described in ISO 2233.

ISO standard test reports include general information such as the date, time, location, and test engineer. Other more specific information written within the report may include, but is not limited to:

  • A reference to this international standard.
  • The unique identification of this report.
  • A full description of the test specimen and its fittings, cushioning, blocking, closure and reinforcing arrangements.
  • The method used.
  • A description of the contents and if simulated or substituted contents were used.
  • Whether a superimposed load was used and if so, the mass of the load and the period of time during which the test specimen was under load.
  • The vertical motion of the table, whether linear, linear inclined, circular, elliptical or other
  • The vertical and horizontal peak to peak displacement
  • The fixed frequency and the duration of the test.
  • Any deviations from the test method described in this international standard.
  • A record of the result, including any observations which assist in the correct interpretation of the results.
