ASTM F2824 Mechanical Seal Testing for Cups and Containers

ASTM F2824 testing measures the mechanical strength of a lid from a rigid or semi-rigid container. As an ISTA and ISO 17025 certified lab, we realize the importance of flexible lid testing. Meeting the ASTM F2824 requirements can be difficult. We understand the challenges and guide companies through the process.

Keystone partners with customers to achieve package compliance. When packages do not meet the requirements, we assist with finding solutions. We provide comprehensive reports shortly after the completion of the testing. Keystone Compliance creates an accurate test plan to eliminate expensive over-testing.

Summary of ASTM Mechanical Seal Strength Information

ASTM F2824 tests the force required to separate the entire lid from the container. Though it has some similarities, this test differs from ASTM F88. Test method F88 only tests a portion of the seal. The ASTM F2824 test method uses an angle of 45 degrees to determine the maximum forces required to separate the lid. However, other angles of pull may be acceptable.

Typical examples of container shapes include oval, rectangular, and circular. This may also include single or multiple cavities having a sealed lid. Examples of products include ready meals, creamers, coffee, pharmaceutical products, etc. However, this test method is specifically for round cups and bowl containers.

Scope of ASTM F2824 Flexible Package Testing

First, the ASTM F2824 test sample is fasted to the fixture. The starting peel point of the lid is attached to the grip of the force measuring device. The lid is peeled from the container at a constant rate. This rate is measured along the peel line of the container and at a 45-degree angle.

Forces measured during the test are recorded and plotted for analysis and reporting. The standard test method is then repeated using additional flexible peelable lids and test specimens.

The testing apparatus includes a testing machine with a constant-rate-of-peel. An electronic measuring device capable of taking a sufficient number of readings per second is also recommended to be used. This device must be compatible with computer programs so that a graph of force versus displacement can be achieved.

Significance of ASTM Test Method for Mechanical Performance Testing

Test method F88 has been the standard method for mechanical seal strength testing since the 1960s. ASTM F2824 is different in that the entire package seal is peeled open to separate the lid cover. Data is collected for the entire sealed area. This test method is a tool for quality assurance use as well as performance evaluation of a seal during separation.

Conditioning of the samples will depend on the material under judgment. Method D4332 may also provide guidance on conditioning practices. The sample size is determined by using an approved statistically validated sample plan.

If necessary, sample identification is made prior to specific test samples. The information is recorded such that the test results and anomalies can be traced back to the individual specimen.

The test report describes information such as a statement of the angle of peel that was used. This includes any indication of any deviation from the test method. Lastly, a description of any anomalous behavior and sample conditioning during the test is also included.
