ASTM D4332 Standard Practice for Conditioning Containers, Packages, or Packaging Components for Testing

ASTM D4332 Package Testing

ASTM D4332 package testing is used to simulate field conditions that containers may be subjected to. As an ISTA and ISO 17025 certified lab, we realize the importance of ASTM D4332 testing. Meeting the ASTM D4332 requirements can be difficult. We understand the challenges and guide companies through the process.

Keystone Compliance partners with customers to achieve package compliance. We are in constant communication throughout the test process. Our accurate test reports are delivered quickly. When packages do not meet the requirements, Keystone assists with finding solutions.

Summary of ASTM D4332 Conditioning Containers, Packages, or Packaging Components for Testing

The scope of ASTM D4332 testing provides standard and special conditioning and testing atmospheres that are used to simulate particular field conditions that a container, package, or packaging component may encounter during its life or testing cycle.

The ASTM D4332 sustainability package test describes procedures for conditioning these containers, packages, or packaging components so that they approach or reach equilibrium with the atmosphere to which they may be exposed. This standard is commonly used for conditioning when conducting transit simulation tests.

Many materials from which containers and packages are made, especially cellulosic materials, undergo changes in physical properties as the temperature and the relative humidity (RH) to which they are exposed are varied. Therefore, the package should be placed and kept in a specified atmosphere for a length of time such that subsequent measurements of physical properties will be meaningful and reproducible.

The conditions described in ASTM D4332 are either historically accepted standard conditions or special laboratory conditions chosen to represent particular phases of the distribution environment. These special conditions do not necessarily duplicate actual field conditions. They tend to simulate transit conditions and have effects on packages and materials which are related to their field performance.

ASTM D4332 Regulatory Compliance Testing Procedures

Containers, packages, or package components are first collected in accordance with the standard test method being performed. Fiberboard containers may require preconditioning.

Containers or packages that are sealed with aqueous adhesives must have seals made sufficiently prior to pre-conditioning or conditioning. This is done to be sure that the water in the adhesive will not be a factor in conditioning of the package.

The container, package, or packaging component is then placed within the conditioning chamber. The unit under test will be exposed to the required conditions for specified amount of time. If no period is specified, a period of at least 72 hours is recommended.

Wherever possible, the test or measurement is made at the specified conditioning atmosphere. When this is not possible, the test is carried out as quickly as possible after the specimen is removed from the conditioned atmosphere.
