ASTM D4577 Compression Resistance of a Container
ASTM D4577 package testing determines the resistance of a shipping container to an applied constant load. As an ISTA and ISO 17025 certified lab, we realize the importance of containers under constant load package testing. Meeting the ASTM D4577 requirements can be difficult. We understand the challenges and guide companies through the process.
Keystone takes a consultative approach throughout the entire test program. Our proven process helps avoid product launch delays. Keystone Package Testing takes great pride in having a reputation for helping customers achieve their package certifications. Lastly, our accurate test reports are delivered quickly.

Summary of ASTM D4577 Compression Testing Information
ASTM D4577, compression resistance, is hydraulically, pneumatically, or mechanically activated to simulate an imposing constant load for a specified time or till failure.
The acceptance criteria are established prior to testing and consider the required condition of the product at receipt. However, the organization conducting the test may choose any acceptance criteria suitable to their needs. In many cases, the criteria proposed can be defined as the following:
Criterion 1 – Product is damage-free
Criterion 2 – Package is intact
Scope of Containers Under Constant Load Testing
Prior to the ASTM D4577 test, a constant load container is chosen. This selection is dependent on the load to which a bottom container will be subjected to in storage. The choice of a container is based on a percentage of the value obtained by test method D642 on a similar container.
The specimen is centered on the bottom platen so that it does not incur eccentric loading. Next, the test load is induced on the specimen. It is noted that the load shall not be applied to exceed 0.5in./min until the container supports the entire load.
Observations and records begin after 60 seconds to establish a base-time reference. Additional observations are made after 5, 10, 30, and 60 minutes, as well as after 2 hours. Therefore, readings of deformation are made at predetermined intervals, until the specified test period has been reached, or, the container fails
Significance of Compression Resistance of a Container Under Constant Load
In the distribution system for many products, there is a phase where the packaged product may be stored for a period of time. This product is stored in such a manner that one or more containers are covered upon one another.
This ASTM D4577 standard test method is designed to subject a container, empty or filled, to a predetermined static load. It is also designed to determine the applicability of the specified atmospheric conditions within a vertically applied constant load.
Conditioning the ASTM testing procedure and assessing the test specimens are necessary factors in tailoring the test to the specific needs of the customer. When required, the container is conditioned by exposure to fixed or controlled variable conditions. These may include temperature and humidity.
Performance is normally measured based on no more than five representative replicates of a given size and type of container. For testing unitized loads, multiple specimens are recommended.
Lastly, the compression test reports include general and specific information regarding the completed test method. General information covers data such as time, location, date, and test engineer.
Unique information added to the report may consist of the acceptance criteria that have been established. Other information the report takes into account would be the number of containers tested. Lastly, dimensions of the container, and a description of the contents within the container, if any, are also included.
