MIL-STD 202 Flammability Testing
MIL-STD-202 Method 111 testing evaluates the flammability of a part or equipment when exposed to an external flame. As an ISO 17025 certified lab, we realize the importance of environmental regulatory compliance testing. Meeting the MIL-202 flammability requirements can be difficult. We understand the challenges and guide companies through the process.
Keystone Compliance partners with customers to achieve MIL-STD-202 product compliance. When products do not meet the requirements, we assist with finding solutions. Our pricing is competitive and we offer volume discounts. Additionally, we are in constant communication throughout the entire test process.

Summary of Standard Test Method 111
The MIL-STD 202 method 111 flammability test method determines the flammability of an exposed part to an external flame. The environmental compliance standard defines flammability as the ability of a part to support combustion. This is determined by the multiple different conditions:
- The time it takes for a part to become self-extinguishing after the application of a flame.
- The part does not support violent burning.
- The exposure of a part to a flame does not result in an explosive-type fire.
- The spreading of surface burning on larger parts is deterred.
The heat of the flame at the point of impingement is one of the principal factors that affect the results of an external flame test. The size of the flame, the time of exposure, the volume of the part, and the presence of circulating materials are also factors that may affect the results of the flame test.
Scope of MIL 202 Standard Flammability Testing
A test chamber is considered an enclosure protected from air current but provided with means for venting fumes and admitting fresh air. The chamber is made of a standard chemistry hood with the exhaust fan turned off. However, a metal box with specified dimensions, with a removable front, is also acceptable.
Within the test chamber, a support stand with suitable adjustable vertical brackets or other mounting clamps is used. These have the purpose of holding the specimens at a specific distance and position concerning the applied flame.
Mounting clamps must be thermally insulated from the specimen. This is done in order to not act as heat sinks.
A propane torch, having a nozzle assembly, is used. Furthermore, cracked propane gas is to be used as fuel.
Lastly, a timing device is used to indicate the time of application of the flame and the burning of visible flame on the specimen.
MIL 202 Flammability Compliance Testing Procedures
First, the specimen is mounted in the test chamber. The torch is placed so that the axis of the flame is in the vertical direction. Next, the torch is ignited and stabilized. The flow of gas through the nozzle of the torch is adjusted. The inner-cone length must be ½ inch between the inner cone tip and a point in the plane of the nozzle rim.
Generally, the flame is applied to the specimen for 15 seconds. Upon removal of the applied flame, the time of the burning of visible flame on the specimen is recorded. The recorded time is then compared with the allowable time specified in the individual specification. Any violent burning of the specimen or explosive-type fire is also recorded.
After the testing is completed, a report is created with the following information:
- Direction of the axis of the flame
- Point of impingement of the applied flame
- Time of application
- Allowable time for the burning of the visible flame
- Measurements after the test
