Summary of ASTM Internal Pressure Testing
ASTM D7660 provides information to help define various terms used as part of the United Nations certification process. It also provides information for recommended equipment and fittings for conducted pressure tests.
Scope of ASTM D7660 United Nations Package Testing
The current regulations do not have a required sample size. However, appropriate specimens are randomly selected and inspected. This helps provide the best test results. Test pressure is determined based on the pressures required in the regulations.
After the container is sealed and the air has been removed, the container is pressurized. By adding water, the container is pressurized continuously and slowly up to the required test pressure. The water stays throughout the entire test cycle. This allows the necessary water to be applied to the container through the regulator if container expansion occurs.
The elapsed time to reach the required test pressure is recorded. This includes all design types. If the pressure station incorporates a flow meter, the rate of the flow is also reported. Larger containers may need to be secured with rope, straps, or shims to prevent them from tipping over as they expand during the test.
Significance of ASTM D7660 Internal Pressure Testing
Dangerous goods require performance tests to be conducted on packages before being authorized for use. The regulations do not include standardized procedures for conducting performance tests. Because of this, the test may result in a non-uniform approach.
Pressure testing is a standard guide for conducting internal pressure tests on packaging undergoing U.N. certification testing. These packages are required to meet the pressure capability requirements.
The ASTM D7660 test method duration is conducted at the minimum times required by the applicable regulations. The test time begins when the specimen stabilizes at the minimum required test pressure. Lastly, each package being evaluated is visually monitored throughout the test. Any leakage of water is recorded.
The report may include general information such as the date, time, location, and test technician. More in-depth information written in the report includes but is not limited to:
- Sample size
- Container-closing method
- Equipment used
- Photographs or descriptions of the container orientation
- Temperature of the filled water container
- General container information
