Summary of ASTM D5094 Threaded and Lug-Style Container Information
ASTM D5094 is used to indicate the ability of a container to survive the distribution environment without leaking. The leakage of liquids, test method D4094, may not be suitable to determine the leak resistance of containers intended for the transportation of hazardous materials.
Scope of Gross Leak Package Testing
Two test methods can be conducted for ASTM D5095 product certifications. Method A is the shipping container vibration and storage test. Method B is the container vibration and vacuum chamber test.
Method A – Test specimens are filled to their expected capacity with product or liquid. The closure is then applied to the container. Closures should be applied with the same torque as would be encountered in production. The specimens are stored on their sides for four weeks.
At the conclusion of the test, the closure is removed and inspected for signs of leakage or crusting from partial leakage. If there is leakage to the threads but not to the outside, the specimen may or may not be acceptable. This effect is up to the user of this test method. However, it can be used as a comparative evaluation between closures and mold cavities.
Method B – Test specimens are partially filled with product or liquid. Like method A, closures should be applied with the same torque as would be encountered in production. Next, the specimens are packed into shipping containers and vibrated. The specimen is then examined and leak locations are noted.
Following vibration, the specimens are removed and subjected to a -34kPa vacuum for 10 minutes. Lastly, the specimen is removed from the vacuum chamber and examined for leakage, cracks, or other visible damage.
Significance of ASTM D5094 Performance Testing
This ASTM D5094 testing procedure is used to indicate the integrity of the container and closure system in the distribution environment. The ASTM test also measures the ability of the container and closure system to prevent leakage when stored or transported upright, inverted, or on its side.
Leakage testing allows for the comparison of threaded and lug-style closures of similar or different materials, or different manufacturers. The test protocols are suitable for packaging development, engineering, and tooling evaluations.
The containers are conditioned at ambient laboratory conditions for at least 4 hours before testing. However, the torqued container closure specimens are stored upright for 24 hours at ambient conditions before the starting of the test.
The D5094 test report includes specific and general information following the procedures. General information consists of the date, time, location, and test engineer. Specific information may include the temperature and relative humidity of the test area, the description of shipping cycles, and lastly, the variations made in the test.
