Ingress Protection (IP Code) Testing – IP04: Splashed Water Protection
The purpose of IP04 testing is to evaluate how well a product can withstand water splashes from all directions, in addition to its resistance to large objects. This testing is crucial for products used in environments where sudden water exposure is a possibility, ensuring that they remain operational and safe even after being splashed.
As a certified Ingress Protection testing laboratory, we realize the importance of IP Code testing. Meeting ingress protection compliance requirements can be difficult. We understand the challenges and guide companies through the process.
Additionally, Keystone offers immediate emergency scheduling. When products do not meet the requirements, we assist with finding solutions. Keystone takes a consultative approach throughout the entire test program. Keystone provides the peace of mind that all of your needs will be met under one roof. Our engineers take a consultative approach so customers can focus more on R&D and the marketing of their product.

Summary of IP 04 Ingress Protection Testing
IP04 testing is part of the broader International Protection (IP) Marking system, as established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This system classifies and rates the degree of protection provided against the intrusion of solid objects (including body parts like hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water.
Specifically, the IP04 rating focuses on protection against objects larger than 50 mm and splashing of water.
Understanding IP04 Testing
The IP04 rating is composed of two essential elements:
Large Object Protection (First Digit – ‘0’)
This test states that there is no protection provided against solid objects.
Splashed Water Protection (Second Digit – ‘4’)
This test evaluates the product’s ability to withstand splashing water from all directions.
IP04 Laboratory Testing Procedures
The process for IP04 testing is methodical and standardized:
Test for Large Object Protection: There is no testing procedure associated with the first digit ‘0’ in an IP rating. This is because it indicates that the product offers no protection against solid objects.
Test for Splashed Water Protection: The product is exposed to splashing water from all directions. This is achieved by using a spray nozzle to splash water against the enclosure from any angle for at least 10 minutes. The test simulates the effect of splashing water equivalent to 10 liters per minute.
Importance of IP04 Testing
Enhanced Product Safety
IP04 testing ensures that products are safe to use in environments where they may be exposed to water splashes and large objects.
Reliability in Wet Conditions
Products that pass the IP04 test demonstrate reliability in wet conditions, which is crucial for certain applications.
Consumer Trust and Compliance
A product with an IP04 rating reassures consumers of its quality and compliance with international standards.
Adherence to IP04 standards is often essential for products designed for outdoor or wet environments.
IP04 testing is critical in various sectors:
Outdoor Electrical Equipment: For devices that may encounter splashing water, such as garden tools and outdoor lighting.
Consumer Electronics: In household environments where splashing water is common, like kitchens and bathrooms.
Industrial and Commercial Equipment: For machinery and equipment in environments where water splashes can occur.
Expert IP 04 Ingress Protection (IP Code) Testing Laboratory
IP04 testing is essential for determining a product’s capability to withstand water splashes and large objects, ensuring safety and reliability in environments prone to such exposures. This testing is not merely a regulatory hurdle but a significant step in building consumer trust and enhancing product longevity.
In addition to IP04 testing, Keystone has a full scope of testing equipment to provide all of the IP Code tests from IP10 to IP69K. Our team strives to give our customers more time and energy on product development instead of testing.
