Summary of IP 01 Ingress Protection Testing

IP01 testing is part of the broader International Protection Marking code, commonly referred to as the IP code. The IP code is an international standard, designated by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), which classifies and rates the degree of protection provided by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures against intrusion, dust, accidental contact, and water.

Specifically, the IP01 rating addresses the protection of equipment against the ingress of solid foreign objects of 50 mm diameter and greater and vertically falling drops of water.

Understanding IP01 Testing

IP01 testing comprises two primary aspects: testing for protection against large objects (denoted by the first digit ‘0’) and protection against dripping water (denoted by the second digit ‘1’).

Large Object Protection (First Digit – ‘0’)

This test states that there is no protection provided against solid objects.

Drip Water Protection (Second Digit – ‘1’)

This test assesses the product’s ability to function effectively in the presence of vertically falling water drops. The test simulates a scenario where water drips vertically onto the product at a rate of 1 mm per minute for a duration of at least 10 minutes.

IP 01 Laboratory Testing Procedures

The testing procedures for IP01 are methodical and standardized to ensure consistent results:

Test for Large Object Protection: There is no testing procedure associated with the first digit ‘0’ in an IP rating. This is because it indicates that the product offers no protection against solid objects.

Test for Drip Water Protection: The enclosure is placed under a grid of water drips. Water is dripped onto the enclosure from a height of 200 mm above the top surface at a rate of 1 mm per minute.

The test duration is based on the surface area of the enclosure being tested, calculated at 1 minute for every square meter of the enclosure surface area, with a minimum of 10 minutes of testing.
