IEC 60068-2-40 Combined Cold and Low Air Pressure Testing
IEC 60068-2-40 combines cold and low air pressure compliance testing to evaluate equipment and component integrity. As an ISO 17025-certified environmental test lab, we realize the importance of IEC 60068-2-40 cold and altitude testing. Meeting the environmental IEC 60068 requirements can be difficult. We understand the challenges and guide companies through the process.
Keystone Compliance creates an accurate test plan to eliminate expensive over-testing. Our proven process helps avoid product launch delays. Furthermore, we expedite comprehensive reports shortly after completion of the test. Keystone’s engineers take a consultative approach throughout the entire test program.

Summary of IEC 60068-2-40 Cold and Low Air Pressure Testing
This environmental test standard evaluates the ability of components or equipment to be stored and used under a combination of conditions. The low-temperature and low-altitude conditions are simultaneous.
IEC 60068-2-40 Testing Procedures
This test is a combination of Test Ab or Ad: Cold, and Test M: Low air pressure.
Pre-Conditioning
First, the unit under testing is introduced into the chamber in the unpacked, switched-off state, in its normal position, or as otherwise discussed. The specimen is subjected to appropriate conditions specified in IEC 60068-2-1. In the case of operational tests, the unit is checked to make ensure that it is capable of operation.
Procedures
Preferred temperatures may range from 25 C to 55 C. On the other hand, air pressure can be as low as 44 mbar to 700 mbar. Generally, tests are performed for a total of 2 or 16 hours.
For operational tests, intermediate measurements are performed during the final hour of the low-pressure period. The unit under testing is switched off or unloaded before the air pressure is restored.
Once the temperature is maintained, the chamber air pressure is reduced to the appropriate severity. The change in air pressure must not exceed 100 mbar per minute.
Next, the unit is visually inspected, and electrically and mechanically checked for any form of malfunction.
Report
Once the test is complete, the following details are given:
- Preconditioning
- Initial measurements
- Details of mounting or supports
- State of specimen (including cooling system)
- Severity of temperature, pressure, and duration of exposure
- Loading condition during recovery
- Final measurements
