Summary of ASTM D2247 Humidity Compliance Testing

The ASTM D2247 standard test method evaluates the water resistance of coatings. Water can cause the degradation of coatings. Knowing how a coating resists water can be useful in predicting its service life.

This humidity test is carried out by exposing coated specimens in an atmosphere maintained at 100% relative humidity.

Failure in tests at 100% humidity is caused by several factors. This includes:

  • A deficiency in the coating
  • Contamination of the substrate
  • Inadequate surface preparation

Note that this standard is limited to obtaining, measuring, and controlling conditions and procedures. ASTM D2247 does not specify the preparation of the specimen, test conditions, or evaluation of results.

The tests conducted at 100% relative humidity are used for quality control, research and development, and substrate treatments. These tests result in either a pass or a fail. A coating is considered to pass if no water-related failures occur.

ASTM D2247 Humidity Testing Procedures

First, a control specimen of paint with known durability must be included with each test. This control specimen can provide a warning of changes in test severity in a given apparatus. The control can also indicate variations in test severity between different apparatuses.

It is recommended that two replicate specimens of each different coating be used. This will compensate for variations between specimens and variations in the test conditions with the apparatus.

When conducting ASTM D2247, the temperature of the saturated air and water vapor mix is roughly 38 C. The specimen is supported approximately 15 degrees from vertical. Additionally, the specimens are spaced at least 30 mm apart.

Droplets of condensation should appear evenly on the specimen at all times. The chamber is mapped throughout the exposure zone to avoid areas where condensation does not occur. The test is operated continuously with limited short interruptions.

After the conclusion of the test, the specimens are wiped off till dry. Next, the specimens under testing are evaluated for no less than 5 minutes. The specimens are rated for changes in color, blistering, etc.

Lastly, a report is created including the following information. This list is not intended to be all-inclusive.

  • Sample identification
  • Results of the evaluation(s)
  • Hours of duration
  • Test temperature
  • Special conditions of the test
  • Any deviations in the test procedure
