ASTM D2247 humidity testingASTM D2247 Water Resistance Humidity Testing

ASTM D2247 water resistance humidity testing evaluates the effectiveness of coatings in a 100% relative humidity environment. As such, it plays a critical role in assessing long-term durability. As an ISO-17025 accredited environmental compliance test lab, we recognize the importance of water resistance and relative humidity testing and are committed to delivering accurate, reliable results.

However, meeting the ASTM D2247 humidity requirements can be difficult. That’s why we understand the challenges involved and guide companies through each step of the process.

At Keystone, our engineers take a consultative approach throughout the entire test program. As a result, we have built a reputation for helping customers achieve their environmental product certifications. In addition, we maintain constant communication throughout the entire test process to ensure clarity and efficiency. Moreover, we offer competitive pricing and volume discounts to meet your budget needs. Following test completion, we expedite comprehensive reports to keep your timelines on track. Ultimately, our proven process helps avoid costly product launch delays.

Summary of ASTM D2247 Humidity Compliance Testing

The ASTM D2247 standard test method evaluates how well coatings resist water exposure. Water can degrade coatings over time, so understanding a coating’s resistance helps predict its service life.

To perform this humidity test, technicians expose coated specimens to an atmosphere maintained at 100% relative humidity.

Several factors can cause failures under these conditions, including:

  • A deficiency in the coating

  • Contamination of the substrate

  • Inadequate surface preparation

This standard focuses on defining, measuring, and controlling test conditions and procedures. However, it does not cover specimen preparation, specific test conditions, or evaluation criteria.

Organizations use 100% relative humidity tests for quality control, research and development, and substrate treatment assessment. Each test results in either a pass or fail. A coating passes if it shows no water-related failures.

ASTM D2247 Humidity Testing Procedures

First, include a control specimen of paint with known durability in each test. This control helps detect changes in test severity within the same apparatus and highlights differences between multiple apparatuses.

Use two replicate specimens for each different coating. This approach compensates for natural variations between samples and helps account for inconsistencies in test conditions.

When conducting ASTM D2247, maintain the temperature of the saturated air and water vapor mixture at approximately 38 °C. Support each specimen at an angle of about 15 degrees from vertical, and space them at least 30 mm apart to ensure consistent exposure.

Ensure condensation droplets form evenly across the surface of each specimen. To maintain accuracy, map the chamber throughout the exposure zone and avoid placing specimens in areas without proper condensation. Operate the test continuously, allowing only brief interruptions when necessary.

After completing the test, dry each specimen thoroughly. Then, evaluate the specimens for a minimum of five minutes, checking for changes such as discoloration, blistering, or other surface defects.

Finally, prepare a report that includes the following information (note: this list is not exhaustive):

  • Sample identification

  • Evaluation results

  • Duration of exposure (hours)

  • Test temperature

  • Special test conditions

  • Any deviations from standard procedure
