Summary of ISO 14982 EMC Machinery Testing

The electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of agricultural and gardening equipment is determined by ISO 14982 conformity testing. ISO 14982 also includes tractors and equipment used for forestry and landscaping.

The ISO standard also applies to electrical/electronic parts intended for fitting into machines.

Furthermore, the EMC standard test method is intended to measure the broadband emissions from machines. Two alternative reference antenna distances are permitted: 10m to 3m from the machine.

On the other hand, ISO 14982 does not apply to machines directly supplied with low voltage current from public electrical mains.

Electromagnetic compatibility is defined as the ability of a machine or component to function well in its electromagnetic environment. This includes without introducing intolerable electromagnetic disturbances to other equipment in that environment.

ISO 14982 Regulatory Compliance Test Conditions

In every EMC test procedure, reference limits are determined to which the complete production has to correspond. Test specimens can fulfill tightened limit values. If this occurs, all series-products which are represented by the test specimen comply with the reference limits.

No disturbances will occur during testing that may affect the driver’s direct control of the machine. The driver’s direct control of the machine is exercised using steering, braking, ground speed, or engine speed control.

The ISO 14982 standard test is intended to measure the broadband emissions from machines. Two alternative reference antenna distances are permissible. Any antenna may be used provided it can be normalized to the reference antenna.

Measurements are made over the whole frequency range from 30 MHz to 1,000 MHz. The minimum scan time must comply with CISPR 12. Investigations are made to ensure that this is due to the machine and not the background radiation. Furthermore, measuring equipment must comply with the requirements of CISPR 16.
