Summary of IEC 61000-4-9 Electromagnetic Compatibility EMC Testing

The international EMC standard relates to the immunity requirements of the equipment to pulse magnetic disturbances. These disturbances are mainly caused by:

  • Industrial installations and power plants;
  • Medium voltage and high voltage substations.

Other IEC standards dealing with EMC-conducted disturbances also cover the same aspects. This includes the performance of electrical equipment for household, commercial, and industrial applications when subjected to pulsed magnetic fields.

Scope of IEC Pulse Magnetic Field Immunity Compliance Testing

Equipment subjected to an array of magnetic fields. These may influence the reliable operation of equipment and systems. The following IEC standard test procedures demonstrate the immunity of equipment when subjected to impulse magnetic fields. However, this is only related to a specific location and installation conditions.

Pulsed magnetic fields are generated by lightning strikes on buildings. They may also be generated on other metal structures including aerial masts, earth conductors, and initial faults transients in low, medium, and high voltage electrical systems. 

The test is mainly applicable to electronic equipment to be installed in electrical plants. As well as, telecontrol centers. It is not relevant to distribution network equipment. Other applications may be considered by product committees.

The following terms are used in this electromagnetic compatibility, EMC, standard. These definitions may apply to the restricted field of magnetic disturbances:

Induction coil – Conductor loop of defined shape and dimensions, in which flows a current, generating a magnetic field of defined constancy in its plane and in the enclosed volume.

Induction coil factor – Ratio between the magnetic field strength generated by an induction coil of given dimensions and the corresponding current value. The field that is measured at the center of the coil plane, without the EUT.

Immersion method – Method of application of the magnetic field to the equipment under test, which is placed in the center of an induction coil.

Proximity method – Method of application of the magnetic field to the equipment under test, where a small induction coil is moved along the side of the EUT to detect particularly sensitive areas.

IEC 61000-4-9 Electromagnetic Compatibility EMC Immunity Lab Testing Procedures

The test procedure includes four parts. First, verification of the laboratory reference conditions. Next, preliminary verification of the correct operation of the equipment. After that, the test is carried out. Lastly, the test results are evaluated and sent to the manufacturer.

IEC 61000-4-9 test results are classified in terms of the loss of function or degradation of performance of the equipment under test. However, it is only relative to a performance level defined by its manufacturer, the requester of the test, or agreed between the manufacturer and purchaser of the product.

Lastly, the test report will contain specific and general information necessary to reproduce the test. In particular, the following is recorded:

  • The item specified in the test plan.
  • Identification of the EUT and any associated equipment.
  • Identification of the test equipment.
  • Any special environmental conditions in which the test is performed.
  • Any specific conditions necessary to enable the test to be performed.
  • Performance level defined by the manufacturer, requestor, or purchaser.
  • Performance criterion specified in the generic, product, or product family standard
