IEC 61000-4-39 Radiated Immunity Testing

IEC 61000-4-39 Radiated Immunity Testing in Close Proximity

The IEC 61000-4-39 test standard evaluates electronic equipment exposed to radiated immunity. As a leader in EMC regulatory compliance testing, Keystone Compliance assists electronic equipment manufacturers with radiated immunity testing. Meeting the IEC, EN, and other EMC testing requirements can be challenging. Not only do we understand the challenges, but we help guide companies through the process.

Keystone’s EMC testing engineers streamline the process and assist companies in achieving the compliance they require. We also offer competitive pricing and constant communication throughout the test program.

What sets us apart from other NRTLs is our extensive troubleshooting process. When products do not meet your specified test requirements, we assist in finding solutions.

Summary of IEC 61000-4-39 Immunity Compliance Testing

IEC 61000-4-39 evaluates electrical and electronic equipment when exposed to radiated immunity. More specifically, the test pertains to radiated electromagnetic energy from RF transmitters used in close proximity to electronics.

The applicable frequency range for this 61000-4 standard ranges from 9 kHz to 6 GHz.

Equipment considered in this standard includes:

  • Fixed installation equipment exposed to portable transmitting devices
  • Mobile equipment exposed to fixed transmitting devices
  • Mobile equipment exposed to other mobile transmitting devices

The objective of this standard is to establish common references for evaluating immunity requirements. IEC 61000-4-39 does not replace the general immunity requirements of electronic equipment. IEC 61000-4-39 is only applicable if equipment is exposed to disturbance sources in close proximity.

The term “close proximity” generally refers to a separation distance between the source and victim equipment. This distance is less than or equal to 200 mm for frequencies greater than 26 MHz. The distance is less than or equal to 500 mm for frequencies lower than 26 MHz.

IEC 61000-4-39 Test Program

Conditioning

Unless otherwise specified, the conditions are within any limits for the operation of the unit under testing.

IEC 61000-4-39 is not performed if the relative humidity is so high that condensation appears on the equipment under testing. The electromagnetic conditions of the laboratory must guarantee the correct operation of the equipment.

All testing for IEC 61000-4-39 is performed as close as possible to the actual installation conditions.

Test Procedure

For magnetic field immunity, there are two level setting procedures. One procedure ranges from 9 kHz to 150 kHz. The second procedure for magnetic field immunity ranges from 150 kHz to 26 MHz. This portion of the IEC 61000-4-39 test is performed by exposing the unit under testing to a specified signal level.

For radiated RF field immunity testing, the antenna is moved according to the window size of the uniform area covered by the transverse electromagnetic horn antenna used. This is repeated until all selected areas of the equipment surface have been tested.

Test Results and Report

The IEC 61000-4-39 test results are classified in terms of the loss of function or degradation of performance. This criterion is relative to a performance level defined by the equipment’s manufacturer.

After the completion of the IEC 61000-4-39 immunity test, a report is created. The report contains all the information necessary to reproduce the test. The following is recorded. This list is not intended to be all-inclusive.

  • Identification of the equipment under testing
  • Any specific environmental conditions
  • Performance levels defined by the manufacturer
  • Any effects on the unit under testing observed during or after the application of the test disturbance
  • The frequency range of application of the test
  • The applied test levels
