IEC 60068-2-42 Sulfur Dioxide Regulatory Compliance Testing
IEC 60068-2-42 sulfur dioxide testing evaluates equipment when subjected to corrosive atmospheres. As an ISO-17025 accredited environmental compliance test lab, we realize the importance of sulfur dioxide testing. Meeting the environmental IEC 60068-2-42 requirements can be difficult. We understand the challenges and guide companies through the process.
Keystone’s engineers take a consultative approach throughout the entire test program. When products do not meet the requirements, we assist with the troubleshooting process. Our accurate test reports are delivered quickly. Lastly, we expedite comprehensive reports shortly after the completion of the test.

Summary of Sulfur Dioxide Compliance Testing
IEC 60068-2-42 testing provides accelerated means to assess the corrosive effects of atmospheres polluted with sulfur dioxide. More specifically, this test assesses sulfur dioxide on contacts and connections.
Furthermore, the IEC 60068-2-42 sulfur dioxide test is suitable for giving information on a comparative basis. However, the IEC standard is not ideal for a general corrosion test. It may not predict the behavior of contacts and connections in industrial atmospheres.
Scope of IEC 60068-2-42 Sulfur Dioxide Testing
This IEC 60068 test standard has two objectives.
First, to determine the influence of atmospheres containing sulfur dioxide. These atmospheres influence the contact properties of precious metal or metal-covered contacts and connections. This excludes contacts consisting of some silver and some of its alloys.
Second, to check solderless connections. This is done in regard to their tightness or effectiveness. In all tests, the major performance criterion is the change in contact resistance caused by exposure to the sulfur dioxide test atmosphere.
IEC 60068-2-42 Testing Program
Pre-Test
The composition of the atmosphere within the test chamber must have a temperature of 25 C and a relative humidity of 75%.
Unless otherwise specified, the specimens under test are not to be cleaned.
Test Procedure
IEC 60068-2-42 may require a resistance measurement to be carried out in combination with mechanical tests. This includes shock or vibration testing.
Specimens are measured, mechanically checked, and may be subjected to mechanical endurance tests.
Routine checks are conducted to ensure test conditions are maintained. Next, precautions are taken to ensure that the contacts are not disturbed during the exposure period.
For this IEC 60068-2 standard, the specimens are exposed without any electrical load. These specimens are exposed to the test atmosphere for 4, 10, or 21 days.
After subjecting the units to specified atmospheric conditions, the units are removed from the chamber and stored under standard recovery conditions. The conditions are no less than 1 hour and no more than 2 hours before contact resistance measurements are made.
Test Report
Once the IEC 60068-2-42 sulfur dioxide test is complete, a report is written encompassing the following information:
- Measurements, checks, and mechanical endurance before testing
- If contacts are mated or unmated
- Electrical loading or operational conditions of the specimen
- Duration of the test
- Measurements, checks, and a visual inspection of results after testing
