Differences between Hazardous Location and Field Evaluation Testing
While HAZLOC testing is specifically focused on verifying safety in hazardous locations, field evaluation testing covers a broader spectrum of equipment, ensuring it meets safety standards based on its operational environment.
For equipment intended for hazardous locations, both HAZLOC testing and field evaluation testing are often necessary to ensure comprehensive safety and compliance.

Common Ground
Both HAZLOC testing and field evaluation testing are concerned with ensuring the safety of electrical equipment, particularly in environments where hazards could be present. Hazards include:
- Explosive atmospheres
- Flammable gases
- Dust
- Corrosive conditions
These tests ensure that equipment meets safety standards to prevent accidents like fires, explosions, or electrical hazards.
HAZLOC Testing
HAZLOC testing specifically addresses the safety of equipment used in hazardous locations. These are environments where there are increased risks of fire or explosion due to the presence of flammable gases, vapors, or combustible dust. Equipment tested under HAZLOC standards is subject to rigorous evaluations to ensure it can operate safely in these dangerous environments without igniting or causing an explosion. Examples include testing for:
- Explosion-Proof (XP) enclosures
- Flameproof ratings
- Ingress protection (IP) levels to prevent entry of flammable dust or moisture
HAZLOC testing is usually required for equipment used in industries like oil and gas, chemical manufacturing, and mining, where explosive or flammable materials are present. Testing ensures that equipment complies with standards like IEC 60079, NFPA 70 (NEC), or ATEX directives for hazardous locations.
Field Evaluation Testing
Field evaluation testing, on the other hand, is a more general inspection process conducted on-site to verify the safety and compliance of equipment with various UL standards, including UL 508, UL 61010, and others.
Field evaluations are commonly used when equipment is either custom-built, modified after manufacturing, or not covered by a pre-existing certification.
These evaluations focus on confirming that the equipment meets the relevant safety standards (such as grounding, wiring, and enclosure integrity) for the specific environment it is installed in.
The Link Between the Two
While HAZLOC testing specifically assesses equipment for hazardous environments, field evaluation testing can apply to a wider range of equipment in all types of settings, including hazardous locations.
If an industrial control panel or piece of equipment needs to be installed in a hazardous location, it may require both:
- HAZLOC testing to ensure it meets the appropriate explosion-proof or flameproof standards.
- Field evaluation testing to confirm that it was properly installed and is functioning safely according to safety codes, including verifying that the equipment meets the local electrical codes and regulatory standards.
In some cases, a field evaluation test may be necessary after HAZLOC testing to verify the equipment’s compliance with installation standards and ensure it continues to operate safely once installed in its working environment.
For instance, a hazardous location enclosure may pass initial testing for explosion-proof criteria but still need a field evaluation to confirm that the installation and assembly on-site meet the required electrical safety codes.
