Consultative Approach

EN 61000-4-8 Testing – Power Frequency Magnetic Field Immunity

As a leader in EMC regulatory compliance testing, Keystone Compliance assists electronic equipment manufacturers with EMC testing. Meeting the IEC, EN, and other EMC testing requirements can be challenging. Not only do we understand the challenges, but we help guide companies through the process.

Keystone Compliance’s accurate test reports are delivered quickly using our “four-eyes” approach. Meaning that multiple engineers and technicians review each report, ensuring that all the information required is present. We tailor each test plan to individual customer needs minimizing unnecessary costs and over-testing. From concept through compliance, Keystone meets all of our customer needs under one roof.

Summary of EN 61000-4-8 EMC Power Frequency Immunity Testing

The scope of EN 61000-4-8 testing determines the immunity requirements of the equipment to magnetic disturbances at power frequencies 50 Hz and 60 Hz. Examples are defined below. These tests are only of equipment under operational conditions.

  • residential and commercial locations
  • industrial installations and power plants
  • medium voltage and high voltage substations

The applicability of EN 61000-4-8 EMC testing to evaluate equipment installed in different locations. The EN 61000-4-8 test standard does not consider disturbances due to capacitive or inductive coupling in cables or other parts of the field installation.

EN 61000-4-8 test lab establishes a common and reproducible basis for evaluating the performance of electrical and electronic equipment. Additionally, EN 61000-4-8 is strictly for household, commercial, and industrial applications when subjected to magnetic fields at power frequency.

EN 61000 4 8 testing demonstrates the immunity of equipment when subjected to power-frequency magnetic fields. The fields are in relation to the specific locations and installation conditions of the equipment (e.g. proximity of equipment to the disturbance source).

The power frequency magnetic field is generated by power frequency current in conductors or, more seldom, from other devices (e.g. leakage of transformers) in the proximity of equipment.

The EN 61000 4 8 test standard defines:

  • recommended test levels
  • test equipment
  • test set-up
  • test procedure
  • equipment and systems

Keystone now has more than five EMC test chambers, including three three-meter chambers. Furthermore, we are recognized as a leader among other EN 61000-4-8 test labs. Between our capacity and knowledge, we have streamlined the testing process. Lead times on scheduling generally require just a two-week notice.

Our dedicated report writers typically have reports completed within one week of test completion. Even more important than that is our service. We create relationships, not transactions. We do not simply determine whether a device passes or fails.

When failures occur, we roll up our sleeves, identify the source of the failure and work with our customers to determine how best to overcome the failure. This partnership approach is why Keystone Compliance has been recognized by INC. Magazine as one of the fastest-growing companies in the country.
