Summary of EN 55032 Electromagnetic Compatibility EMC Testing

As mentioned above, EN 55032 is intended for multimedia equipment. However, the equipment must have a rating of r.m.s. AC or DC supply voltage not exceeding 600 V. The radiated emission requirements for EN 55032 are not intended to apply to international transmissions of radio transmitters.

Equipment within the scope of CISPR 13 and 22 is also applicable to the EN 55032 EMC test standard.

The scope of this EN standard test method has two main objectives to meet:

  • The EMC standard is used to establish requirements that provide adequate levels of protection of the radio spectrum.
  • EN 55032 is used to specify procedures to ensure the reproducibility of measurements and the repeatability of results.

EMC multimedia equipment is used for information technology, audio, video, broadcast receiver, entertainment light control, or a combination of these. Multimedia equipment (MME) is intended for professional use.

Compliance with EN 55032 classifies as either class A or Class B requirements. Compliance is shown by measuring the EUT’s emissions. Furthermore, emissions are measured only when operating their functions simultaneously, individually in turn, or a combination of the two.

Scope of EN 55032 EMC Compliance Testing

The procedures to be used for the measurement of emission levels depend on several factors. These include:

  • Type of equipment under testing (EUT)
  • The type of port
  • The types of cables used
  • The frequency range
  • The mode of operation.

General electromagnetic compatibility requirements written within a test report are found in IEC 17025. Moreover, sufficient details are provided to recreate and complete the formal measurements needed within each test.

EN 55032 states the mode of operation of the EUT. The report also describes how its ports are exercised throughout the test. The test must indicate whether the product is compliant with the Class A or Class B equipment.

The EMC EN 55032 test report includes important measurements. These measurements are of at least six of the highest emissions relative to the limit for each detector type. The results include information for each emission such as:

  • The port assessed
  • For AC power line measurements, the line under test
  • Frequency and amplitude of the emission
  • Margin with respect to the specified limit
  • The limit at the frequency of the emission
  • The detector used.
