Summary of MIL-STD 461 Cable and Power Lead EMC Testing
This CS conducted susceptibility test is applicable to equipment from 10 kHz to 100 MHz. MIL-461 requirement is for all interconnecting cables. This includes power cables and individual high side power leads. Power returns and neutrals do not need to be tested individually. For submarine applications, MIL-461 and EMC immunity testing is relevant only to cables and leads external to or that exit the pressure hull.
The MIL-STD 461 test procedure is used to verify the ability of equipment under testing (EUT) to withstand damped sinusoidal transients coupled onto EUT associated cables and power leads.
Scope of the MIL-STD-461 Conducted Susceptibility EMC Test
The unintentional radiator must not show any signs of malfunction. Degradation of performance is also not tolerated. This may include any deviation from specified indications, beyond tolerances indicated in the individual equipment or subsystem specification.
This limit is suited for the entire frequency range. Furthermore, compliance is demonstrated at the following frequencies: 0.01, 0.1, 1,10, 30, and 100 MHz. However, there are other frequencies known to be critical to the equipment installation such as platform resonances.
The compliance test signal repetition rate can not be greater than one pulse per second. Nor can it be less than one pulse every two seconds. The pulses are applied for a period of five minutes.
General and specific data are specified in the report. Data includes but is not limited to a list of the frequencies and amplitudes at which the test was conducted for each cable and lead. Data on susceptibility thresholds and the associated frequencies that were determined will also be provided.
To minimize errors, the same signal circuit that was used for calibration between the attenuator at the calibration fixture is maintained. The circuit is connected to the monitor probe. Additional attenuation may be used, if necessary.
EMC Conducted Susceptibility Compliance Testing Procedures
Test procedures are completed as follows:
- The measurement equipment is first turned on and must be allowed sufficient time to stabilize.
- Then, calibration is performed. The amplitude of the signal from the damped sine generator is adjusted to a specified level. The information is recorded, verified, and repeated for each individual frequency.
- Lastly, the equipment under testing is measured and the calibrated test signals to each cable or power lead are applied. The EUT is monitored for degradation of performance. If susceptibility is noted, the threshold level is determined.
The injection and monitor probes are placed around a cable bundle interfacing an EUT connector. The monitor probe must be located 5 cm from the connector. If the overall length of the connector, backshell or backshell extension exceeds 5 cm, the monitor is positioned as close as possible to the connector’s backshell or backshell extension.
