Summary of MIL-STD 461 Compliance of CS Conducted Susceptibility Testing
This electromagnetic compatibility, EMC, requirement is applicable to RF devices from 10 kHz to 200 MHz for all interconnecting cables. This includes power cables. For equipment intended to be installed on ships or submarines, an additional common mode limit of 77 dBμA is applicable. This ranges from 4 kHz to 1 MHz on complete power cables.
The EMC equipment under testing can not exhibit any malfunctions. It may also not show signs of degradation or performance. Lastly, it cannot show deviation from specified indications beyond tolerances indicated in the individual equipment or subsystem specs.
Scope of MIL-461 Testing of EMC Conducted Susceptibility and Bulk Cables
This EMC and MIL-STD-461 standard requirements are not applicable for coaxial cables to antenna ports of antenna-connected receivers exempt for surface ships and submarines.
The MIL-STD 461 lab test procedure is used to verify the ability of the EUT to withstand RF signals coupled onto EUT associated cabling.
The data presented in the unintentional radiator report is written as follows:
- Amplitude versus frequency plots are provided for the forward power levels required to obtain the calibration levels.
- Tables showing scanned frequency ranges and statements of compliance with the requirements for the susceptibility evaluation are also provided.
Conducted Susceptibility EMC MIL-STD 461 Testing Procedures
The EMC 461-test procedures are performed as follows:
- The measurement equipment is first turned on and allowed sufficient time for stabilization.
- Next, calibration is performed. This is done by setting up the signal generator to 10 kHZ, unmodulated. After that, the applied signal is increased. This is done until measurement receiver A indicates the current level specified in the applicable limit exists in the center conductor of the calibration fixture. Subsequently, the forward power is recorded and the frequency band is scanned from 10 kHz to 200 MHz.
- Verification of probes in the calibration set up is the next step. A scan is conducted as though this is a test of an EUT cable.
- Lastly, EUT testing is performed. The test is configured and executed on each cable bundle interfacing with each electrical connector on the EUT. This includes the complete power cables.
