Summary of MIL-STD 461 Compliance EMC Testing
This conducted susceptibility/immunity electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) test is applicable from 60 Hz to 100 kHz. The EMC test is carried out for equipment and subsystems. These subsystems and EMC equipment must have an operating frequency of 100 kHz or less. They must also have an operating sensitivity of 1 μV or better. Handheld equipment is exempt from this requirement.
The EMC equipment under testing (EUT) must not show any signs of degradation. The EUT must not show signs of malfunction or deviation from specified indications. These indications are beyond the tolerances indicated in the individual equipment or subsystem specification.
Lastly, this MIL-STD 461 EMC test procedure is used to verify the ability of the equipment under testing to withstand structure currents.
Scope of MIL-461 Standard Electromagnetic Compatibility EMC Device Testing
The EMC and conducted immunity 461-test is set up as follows:
- Configure the EUT and the test equipment to establish a single-point ground for the test setup using the EUT ground terminal. Using isolation transformers, all AC power sources are isolated. The safety ground leads of all input power cables are disconnected.
- The EUT and the test equipment on non-conductive surfaces are placed to enable a single point ground to be established.
- The test points for the injected currents are mostly mounted diagonally across all surfaces of the equipment. However, some other configurations may arise. This includes bulkhead mounted equipment. In which case, the currents are mounted diagonally across the rear surface of the equipment.
- Another different configuration may include equipment that will not be rack mounted. The equipment is configured at diagonal extremes across only the mounting surface.
- Lastly, the signal generator and resistor are connected. These two items are connected to a selected set of test points. The test points are by conductors that are perpendicular to the test surface. The length of these two points must at least be 50 centimeters long.
Data collected will include specific information such as:
- A table is provided showing the mode of operation and susceptible frequency. Current threshold levels, current limit levels, and susceptible test points are also provided.
- A diagram of the EUT showing the location of each test point is prepared.
