Summary of Fixed Microwave Intentional Radiator Testing

47 CFR FCC Part 101 states the test methods, requirements, and information of radio station licenses in the fixed microwave services. The purpose of this standard is to create reproducible procedures for the compliance testing of fixed microwave wireless services. 

The test evaluates the radio spectrum made available for private operational, common carrier, 24 GHz service, microwave operations. These operations are only used if they require transmitting facilities on land or specified offshore coastal areas.

24 GHz Service is described as a fixed point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, and multipoint-to-multipoint radio system. This radio system operates in the 24.25 – 24.45 and 25.05 – 25.25 GHz bands consisting of a fixed main (nodal) station and some fixed user terminals. This service may encompass any digital fixed service.

A system includes the following:

  • The originally licensed system.
  • Any modification to the original system involving a change in antenna azimuth, antenna beam width, authorized frequencies, etc.
  • Additional links are constructed to complete an integrated communication network.
  • Operationally connecting new facilities and/or frequencies.

Scope of Intentional Radiator Fixed Microwave Service Testing

Frequencies in this FCC wireless standard are shared with stations in the fixed-satellite service outside the United States. Applications for new permanent or temporary facilities in these bands will not be accepted for locations in the contiguous United States.

Handling and transmission of messages concerning the safety of life or property must be a priority over other messages. 

The station licensee is responsible for the proper operation of the station at all times. The licensee is expected to provide for observations, servicing, and maintenance as often as necessary to ensure proper operation.
