Additionally, ISTA 6 FedEx B outlines the general simulation procedures for testing packaged products weighing more than 150 lbs. Keystone utilizes compression, vibration, and impact tests to properly evaluate the integrity of a package.

FedEx requires that any shipment weighing more than 150 lbs contain a base that allows movement with a forklift or standard freight pallet jack. Keystone evaluates the load integrity and stability in the shipping environment.

ISTA 6 FedEx B Integrity Testing Procedures

Impact Tests

Side Impact

Keystone performs side-impact tests on an inclined impact test machine. To perform this, the sample is positioned in the center of the carriage. The carriage is then distanced to achieve a minimum velocity of 5.75’ per second at impact. Bottom impact tests are performed on a free-fall drop tester.

Tip Test

A tip test is performed with mechanical assistance on a flat, nonyielding surface. To perform the tip test, the sample is tipped to create a 22-degree angle between the impact surface and the bottom of the test sample. Next, the sample is released. This procedure is carried out on all four sides of the sample.

Bottom Impact

The bottom impact test sample is dropped onto a flat, unyielding surface. The sample is raised 8” above the impact surface. Next, the sample is released to fall freely on the surface. 

Raised Edge Impact

This test is performed with mechanical assistance on a flat, unyielding surface. To carry out the raised edge impact test, a bottom edge is raised 10” above the impact surface. Next, the test sample is released. This test is repeated on all four bottom edges of the sample.

Raised Corner Impact

With one bottom corner of the test sample supported by the impact surface, the diagonal bottom corner is raised 10” above the impact surface. The sample under testing is then released. Note that the sample should return to its original orientation. The raised corner test is repeated on all four bottom corners of the sample.

Compression Test

Keystone performs compression tests on pallets with our newest compression machine with 60” x 60” platens and a 96” platen opening. This machine can provide up to 45,000 pounds of compression.

First, the compression load is calculated. The packaged product is centered on the lower platen of the compression machine. The sample is compressed at a rate of 0.5” per minute.

Vibration Tests

Rotary Vibration

For rotary vibration testing, the machine is set to vibrate at 1.0” total vertical displacement. Packages under testing are subjected to a total of 14,200 vibration impacts.

Random Vibration

Random vibration testing is performed using a vertical electrohydraulic vibration machine. First, the vibration system is programmed to reproduce three consecutive sequences of random vibration profiles. These consist of truck vibration at 0.52 Grms, air vibration at 1.06 Grms, and a repeated truck vibration at 0.52 Grms.

Each sequence is set for 15 minutes if the units are shipped within the U.S. For international shipments, the duration is set for 30 minutes.
