IEC 61010 Resistance to Heat

Section 10 of the IEC 61010 product safety standard provides information on product safety testing in regards to resistance to heat. As a nationally recognized testing lab, we realize the importance of IEC 61010-1 product safety testing. Meeting the IEC 61010 product safety requirements can be difficult. We understand the challenges and guide companies through the process.

Keystone provides the peace of mind that all of your needs will be met. We have a reputation for helping customers achieve their IEC product safety certifications. We are in constant communication throughout the entire product safety test process. Lastly, Keystone takes a consultative approach throughout the entire test program.

Summary of IEC 61010 Product Safety Laboratory Testing

For this IEC product safety standard test, the temperature of easily touched surfaces must not exceed normal conditions. Moreover, it will not exceed 105 C in a single fault condition, at an ambient temperature of 40 C.

Easily touched surfaces of equipment with a maximum ambient temperature of 40 C are allowed to exceed values of normal conditions and 105 C in single fault conditions. However, these surfaces can not exceed more than the amount by which the maximum rated temperature exceeds 40 C.

IEC 61010 product safety compliance is checked by specific measurements and inspection of barriers. These barriers protect against accidentally touching surfaces with temperatures above the required values. They must not be removed by a tool.

Hazards caused by severe temperatures are not uncommon. If true, the temperature of the insulating material of windings can not pass values in normal and single fault conditions.

The IEC 61010 product safety test defines a single fault condition as a means for protection against a hazard are defective or one fault is present and can cause a hazard. Normal conditions are described as conditions in which all means for protection against hazards are intact.

Scope of IEC 61010-1 Regulatory Compliance Testing

Non-metallic enclosures must be resistant to elevated temperatures. This is tested by IEC product safety operative or non-operative treatments.

Operative treatment is when equipment is stored for 7 hours at 70 C or at 10 C above the measured temperature. If the equipment contains components that might be damaged, and empty enclosure is treated. This is then followed by the assembly of the equipment at the end of the treatment.

Non-operative treatment is operated under the specified reference test conditions. It is also operated under ambient temperatures of 20 Celsius. This IEC testing treatment is above the maximum rated ambient temperature if higher than 40 C.

IEC 61010 Product Safety Testing Conditions

Unless a single fault condition specifies otherwise, the manufacturer’s instructions are followed. This is in regards to ventilation, cooling liquid, limits for intermittent use, etc. Any cooling liquid is at the highest-rated temperature.

The insulating material is measured as the temperature of winding wire and of core lamination in contact with the insulating material. It can also be measured by the resistance method. Additionally, the insulating material is measured by using selected temperature sensors. The material is positioned so that they have little to no effect on the temperature of the winding.

Devices tested and intended to produce heat for useful purposes are to be carried out in a test corner. The test corner consists of 2 walls at a right angle, a floor, and if necessary, a ceiling.

Expert IEC 61010-1 Product Safety Lab Testing Laboratory

In addition to IEC standard product safety testing, Keystone has a full scope of expertise such as temperature validation, MIL-STD, and IP Code Testing. Our team strives to give our customers more time and energy on product development instead of testing. Lastly, Keystone has a full lab of test equipment which permits us to provide short lead times on scheduling.
