Summary of ETSI EN 301 489-1 EMC Testing
This unintentional radiator EMC standard compliance test method covers the requirements 3.1 of Directive 2014/53/EU. It also covers the requirements for article 6 of Directive 2014/30/EU for radio equipment and associated ancillary equipment in respect of EMC. This excludes broadcast receivers.
The ETSI EN 301 489 EMC compliance document does not include combinations of radio and associated ancillary equipment. Technical specifications related to the antenna port of radio equipment are not included in this document. However, technical specifications are normally found in the relevant product standards for the effective use of the radio spectrum.
Electromagnetic compatibility, EMC, requirements are selected to ensure an adequate level of compatibility for equipment intended to be used in industrial, commercial, and residential environments. These do not cover extreme cases which may occur in any location but with a low chance of occurrence.
In all cases where a radio product falls within the scope of a specific relevant radio technology part of the standard, the relevant radio technology takes precedence. Compliance of radio requirements of this document does not signify compliance to any requirements related to spectrum management or the use of the equipment.
Lastly, it is important to note that the immunity requirements in this EMC testing document may not reflect the severity of electromagnetic phenomena present in industrial locations. In such cases, different requirements may be more appropriate. For example, CENELEC EN 61000-6-2.
ETSI EN 301 489-1 EMC Product Testing Conditions
The equipment is tested under normal test conditions. This is according to the relevant product and basic standards. It is also according to the information accompanying the equipment. Moreover, the equipment must be within the manufacturer’s declared range of humidity, temperature, and supply voltage.
The test configuration and mode of operation represent the intended use and are recorded in the test report.
Adequate measurements are taken to avoid the effect of immunity test signals on both the measuring equipment and the signal sources. Arrangements are made for test signals at the input of transmitters and the radio frequency output of transmitters. It is also recommended to make arrangements for test signals that are RF input and output of receivers.
The manufacturer must supply the following information to be recorded in the test report.
- The functions of the radio equipment are assessed during and after the EMC exposure.
- The intended functions of the radio equipment.
- The user controls functions and stored data that are required for normal operation.
- The bandwidth of the IF filter immediately after preceding the demodulator.
- Any equipment thermal limitation which prevents continuous testing of the EUT.
- The environment(s) in which the equipment is intended to be used.
- The occupied bandwidth of the corresponding transmitter signal for non-channelized equipment.
