EN 55035 EMC Radio Frequency Testing of Multimedia Equipment

Summary of EN 55035 Unintentional Radiator Device Testing

The EN 55035 testing is also referred to as CISPR 35 testing. The international lab testing standard applies to Multimedia Equipment (MME). Furthermore, only MME that has rated AC or DC supply voltage not exceeding 600 volts. MME intended primarily for professional use is incorporated into this standard. 

Multimedia equipment can be defined as equipment that is information technology equipment, audio, video, broadcast receiver, entertaining lighting control equipment, or a combination of these.

Two main objectives in this CISPR compliance test are acknowledged.

  • This electromagnetic compatibility document establishes radiofrequency energy requirements. This helps provide a suitable level of intrinsic immunity so that the MME will operate as intended. The intended environment can range from 0 kHz to 400 GHz.
  • The EMC document also specifies procedures to ensure the reproducibility of tests and the repeatability of results.

Scope of EN 55035 Electromagnetic Compatibility EMC Compliance Testing

This RF device test requires immunity testing procedures including but not limited to:

  • Selection of applicable tests
  • Disturbance levels to be applied during testing
  • Configuration
  • Performance criteria 

All aspects of the equipment are defined and documented by the manufacturer before the start of the EMC testing procedures. These requirements include, but are not limited to, selection of the primary function(s), specific performance criteria, and modes of operation to be used.

During the testing of ports, the primary functions are monitored and assessed. These are monitored against the relevant performance criteria given by the manufacturer. However, signal processing and data storage functions are assessed following the criteria mentioned in CISPR 35.

A port is described as a physical interface through which electromagnetic energy enters or leaves the equipment under testing. Types of ports include antenna ports, broadcast receiver tuner ports, and optical fibre ports.

Immunity tests required in this standard are performed individually, in any sequence. The same sample is used for all tests relating to a particular EM phenomenon. However, other samples of the EUT may be used to test against different EM phenomena.

There are two types of functions mentioned within this test program:

Direct functions: These include functions that can be observed or monitored. An example is the measurement of demodulated tone within a telephone handset. When direct and indirect functions operate this way, and the two functions are different, the least stringent of these criteria is applied.

Indirect functions: Indirect functions can only be observed by monitoring direct functions. Examples of indirect functions include the ability of a DVD recorder to store video which may be assessed for accuracy using the playback function after the test.

EN 55035 Electromagnetic Compatibility Testing Conditions

Particular requirements within EN 55035 must be considered before testing. Some of these requirements include, but are not limited to:

  • Electrostatic Discharge: ESD is applied to points and surfaces of the EUT which are expected to be touched during normal operation.
  • Continuous RF Disturbances: Swept frequency tests, spot frequency tests, and additional spot frequency tests are applied.
  • Power Frequency Magnetic Field: This protocol is per EN 61000-4-8.
  • Electrical Fast Transients/Bursts: This procedure is per EN 61000-4-4. Multi-conductor cables are tested as single cables. Cables are not split or divided into groups.
  • Surges: This test procedure is per EN 61000-4-5.
  • Voltage Dips and Interruptions: This test procedure is per EN 61000-4-11.
  • Broadband Impulse Conducted Disturbances: Repetitive noise impulses and isolated noise impulses are applied to xDSL ports of the EUT.
