ASTM D5416 Abrasion Resistance by Vibration Testing

ASTM 5416 sustainability and transit testing compares the abrasion resistance of similar stretch wrap films. As an ISTA and ISO 17025 certified lab, we realize the importance of ASTM D5416 vibration testing. Meeting the ASTM D5416 abrasion resistance requirements can be difficult. We understand the challenges and guide companies through the process.

Keystone takes a consultative approach throughout the entire test program. Our pricing is competitive and we offer volume discounts. Our proven process helps avoid product launch delays. When packages do not meet the requirements, Keystone Compliance assists with finding solutions.

Summary of ASTM D5416 Abrasion Resistance Information

This ASTM package standard test method compares the abrasion resistance of similar types of stretch wrap films. The vibration test method is intended to provide only a comparative procedure. This helps evaluate unknown films against a standard or control film. This ASTM performance has been defined as adequate in actual field conditions.

Discretion is advised when the user chooses to determine the applicability of several key factors. This includes the film wrap method, abrasion surfaces, and definition of failure. These are determined so that the test can be tailored to the individual distribution parameters.

Scope of ASTM D5416 Resistance by Vibration Testing

This ASTM D5416 method is used to mimic the abrasion that an outer wrapping of film encounters. Generally, abrasion is experienced in typical shipping and distribution environments. The ASTM D5416 test procedure allows the user of this standard to make relative comparisons while the load is undergoing vibration.

ASTM D5416 compliance testing consists of two single columns of units being individually wrapped. Next, the wrapped columns are set on the vibration testing table. A frequency sweep is performed and the resonant frequency is determined.

Each wrapped test column is vibrated for a total time of 60 minutes. The columns are inspected and measured for abrasion, holes, or tears. Total test duration is taken into consideration. Lastly, the amount of damage is recorded at the end of the test period or time of failure.

Significance of ASTM D5416 Package Testing

The ASTM test method for evaluating abrasion resistance report may include general information. This information incorporates the test procedure, time, location, and test engineer. The number of packages tested and the number of failures recorded will also be included in the report. Details of the package include the type of material and other characteristics.

Specific information covered within this compliance testing method encompasses the dimensions and weight of each unit. Resonance of frequency or machine settings at which the test is run will also be enclosed in the report.

The abrasion resistance test may also include information such as:

  • Dimensions of each unit
  • Weight of each unit
  • Percent stretch
  • Resonance frequency or machine setting at which the test is run
  • Total test duration
  • Number of units per column on the wrapped load
